Porn Kills Love – Part 1

pornkillslove1Some people call this the month of love. Love in relationships, especially marriage relationships, is an important topic. So I think it’s important to talk about one of the biggest love killers: porn.

We live in a pornified culture. A porn website had success in putting their ad up in Times Square. The Fifty Shades of Grey of trailer just aired during the most watched Super Bowl of all time. The latest in virtual reality technology has already immersed people in porn. These are all signs pointing to the fact that more than enough people are consuming porn. Pornography in our culture is at its peak. So I wonder… will it ever decline? Or will it become so mainstream that visiting Times Square or watching the Super Bowl will be impossible for a mindful Christian?

If there’s the slightest sign of hope for our culture, it’s in the growing awareness that porn kills love. There’s a developing movement of men and women who are realizing and admitting that pornography is addicting and it’s ruining their social lives, their sex lives, their relationships, and their marriages. They are learning that porn is hurting people and is not without its victims. And they are starting to take a stand against it. Groups like NoFap and Fight The New Drug are all proclaiming that porn and masturbation habits are killing love relationships in more ways than one.

Keep in mind, these are not faith-based groups. An addiction like this doesn’t target the religious. Yet they are realizing what the bible taught all along: sex isn’t meant to be self-centered. If you think it can be self-centered, you probably prefer porn and masturbation over sex (and many will admit that they do).

Sex is meant for love and porn kills love. As porn takes over our culture, this message will hopefully get louder.

For the Christian, the message doesn’t end there. Sex is not just meant for expressing and strengthening love between a husband and wife. Sex is meant to have an impact on our love of God. But porn kills this love as well. And for the Christian, there isn’t just a slight hope for healing. There’s real hope for total restoration in Christ.

I will discuss how porn kills our love of God in part 2 and hope for the Christian in part 3.
